2012 Preliminary English Advanced at PRIOR

...a tremendous opportunity to excel in English.

English is the only compulsory course that your child must complete for the HSC. Whether or not English comes naturally to a student, it will comprise 20 percent of their ATAR. As such, it is important to excel in HSC English.

The aim of the yearly Preliminary English Advanced tuition programme at PRIOR Education is to give your child the opportunity to excel in English, whether or not they have previously done so. This skills-based programme will expand your child's grasp of two of the most important English outcomes: written expression and literary analysis.

Programme content

The programme is divided into four terms, each developing a different component of English.

Term One
...introduces formal grammar to help your child communicate clearly and concisely. This basic introduction is then expanded with in-depth analysis of grammatical features in texts. We introduce a component of critical analysis that explores and challenges the importance of traditional grammar. It will equip your child with the ability to understand the usage of grammar and gives them the insight to write persuasively and analytically. This will give your child a significant advantage in the HSC.

Term Two
...introduces the foundational text types in English: essays, creative stories, feature articles, interviews, media compositions, speeches and letters. Your child will be taught to evaluate each of these text types and develop their own. This is an essential tool for success in English, as they will be asked to analyse and produce a range of text types in the HSC.

Term 3
...introduces advanced concepts in literary theory and textual analysis. Branches of literary theory explored include: Feminism, Postmodernism, Marxism and Psychoanalysis. Your child will be encouraged to interpret and challenge these complex theories and develop their own critical voice. We then engage in sophisticated textual analysis, focusing on advanced poetic, cinematic and creative forms.

Term 4
...introduces the HSC Area of Study: "Belonging", which is worth 40 percent of your childŐs final HSC Advanced English mark. Whilst other students may struggle to find their feet in this topic, we will give your child the tools to produce Band 6 responses infused with confidence and flair.
